8 in 10 Indians are hooked onto Social Media, spending an average of 4 hours a day!
- If you are in this 80%, then you may be having a Monkey on your head - called Text Neck Syndrome.
Over 58% of us Indians own a smart phone and are connected like never before. Working from home during these times has added to the exponential growth in use.
Text Neck Syndrome is a repetitive stress injury caused by excessive usage of mobile phones for texting & screentime over long periods of time.
If you have experienced any of the following -
Pain and Stiffness in your neck
Shoulder Pain
Tiredness and exhaustion
Headaches
If YES, then this is your body sending YOU a "Message"! Read on...
What prolonged screen-time on mobile does to your body is this:
Your head position is not in its natural state and is not in line with center of gravity and this results in increased stress on your cervical spine i.e., your neck.
The average weight of the human head is 4.5 to 5.8 kgs (never really noticed this, did we??!!)
However, while bending the neck, this weight increases significantly as in the illustration below:
With a typical position of 60 degree bend while looking at our phones, we are increasing the weight on our neck to about 27kgs, which is 6X the normal weight.
That is one heavy monkey!!!
The good news is... this can be prevented / reversed with some simple steps!
Hold phone and other devices at eye level as much as possible
Take frequent breaks every 20-30 minutes, social media can wait!
Practice good posture
Build your muscle strength with specific neck exercises
Regular neck stretches under proper guidance
